Asthma Treatment New Technology

The development of medicine and pharmacy brings fresh air to health problems including asthma. Now the experts have created a new technique of asthma reliever that uses radio waves to overcome the narrowing of the respiratory illnesses suffered by patients with asthma.

The technique is called bronchial thermoplasty. This is the first asthma therapy without medicine. We will conduct trials to demonstrate exceptional response, "said Dr.John D Miller, deputy researcher from McMaster University, Canada.

In thermoplasty therapy, your doctor will use a special cable that can transmit radio waves into the lungs. Heat emitted radio waves will destroy the smooth muscle in the respiratory tract. "The idea of beginning of this thermoplasty is smooth muscle which is along the respiratory tract, when the muscles tighten as a result is narrowed airway," said Miller. "So if the amount of muscle can be reduced then nothing else will make airway narrowing," he added.

In early research, and colleagues Dr.Miller test to 112 people who suffer from asthma, from mild to chronic. Half of the respondents are given three thermoplasty therapy sessions. While the rest use regular asthma medications.

A year later, the air flow in the respiratory tract of respondents who did thermoplasty improvement, ie 39 liters per minute, compared with those taking regular treatment only 8.5 liters.

Thermoplasty recipient group also reported experiencing asthma symptoms free for 40 days, compared with other groups who only 17 days. In the second test, the research team involving 350 patients with asthma. In this second study, the health of the respondents will be followed for two years.

According to other researchers, Dr.Elliot Israel from Harvard Medical School, medical therapy is not only to make air flow more smoothly but also to change some connective tissue in the respiratory tract. "Cell muscles that produce chemicals of life and biological signals that increase inflammation," he said.

"Another important aspect of this method is to return attention to the muscle tissue in patients with asthma. During this muscle tissue is not ignored the experts, so far only focused attention on immunity and inflammation, rather than muscle in the respiratory tract," said Charles G. Irvin from Vermont Lung Center.

According to Irvin, thermoplasty is not the best therapy to influence the muscle tissue. "Patients have to come over three times and there is risk every time you do a bronchoscopy," he said. Moreover thermoplasty effective only for acute patients. "Maybe we can do thermoplasty in ways that are not invasive
